The Proper Steps For Sealcoating Your Driveway

Posted on: 12 May 2021

Sealcoating your asphalt driveway is a great way to protect it and extend its usable life. Sealcoating is designed to protect your driveway from damage caused by leaking oil and fuel, weather, and traffic over time. Sealcoating can also prevent cracks from forming. If you are thinking about seal coating your driveway, you must understand the following steps.

Patch Large Cracks

First, you are going to want to patch large cracks as sealcoating isn't designed to fill these in. You will want to use a cold patch to fill in any cracks that are more than a fraction of an inch wide. If you don't patch the cracks beforehand, those same cracks will come through again. As such, you will want to deal with any cracks in your asphalt first.

Choose the Right Day

Second, you are going to want to choose the right day to seal coat your driveway. Choose a day where it is dry outside and where the temperature is moderate. This will allow the seal coating to go on smoothly and cure properly.

Clean Your Driveway Off

Third, you are going to want to clean your driveway off. You don't want to seal coat your driveway when it is dirty. You can easily clean it off by using a push broom. Then, use a hose and a spray attachment to clean the driveway off. If there are any oil spots, you will want to apply a commercial detergent to them, allow it to soak for a while, and then spray those areas off with water.

After you spray off your driveway, wait at least an hour or two so that your driveway has a chance to dry properly.

Apply the Sealcoating

After this, it is time to apply the seal coating mixture to your driveway. When you apply the mixture, you will want to work in small sections, evenly spreading out the coating. Overlap the strokes from one section to the next so that the entire driveway looks smooth.

Allow Curing Time

After the seal coating has been applied, you will want to allow the coat to cure without any additional pressure. Don't walk or drive on your driveway for the next two days or so to give your driveway the time it needs to cure.

You can seal coat your driveway on your own, or you can save yourself a lot of time and hire a professional team to do the job for you. An experienced team will be able to quickly and efficiently seal coat your driveway in a professional manner. Contact a sealcoating company for more information.
