Is Your Asphalt Paving Cracking? Common Types Of Cracks You Should Know

Posted on: 7 February 2023

After you install your asphalt pavement, you expect it to last as long as you use it appropriately. But this safe, attractive, and affordable paving material isn't indestructible. For example, severe climatic conditions, traffic loads, drainage issues, and other factors can cause crack formations. Luckily, this issue can be rectified through proper maintenance to ensure the surface doesn't deteriorate further. So how do cracks form, and can this problem be avoided or repaired? Here are the cracks to look out for and ways to repair them.

Edge Cracks

This longitudinal crack forms near the edge of the paved area, hence its name. They appear when the materials underneath settle or lack proper support due to poor DIY installation. On the other hand, drying soil can also cause edge cracking, and you will likely notice the cracks if the paved area is near plants. Note that although filling the openings with fresh emulsion will fix the problem, you may still need to improve drainage and clear the plants.

Fatigue Cracks

These surface openings are severe and form as a result of load-related damage; they resemble an alligator's skin. The deterioration can occur if the paving foundation is weak or if you used substandard materials in DIY paving work. In addition, drainage issues that create water pools on the surface can also cause the formation of fatigue cracks. So, if you see these openings on your paving, call a paving contractor to remove the materials on the damaged area and install the right asphalt mix.

Slippage Cracks

Another damage you may notice on your paved area is the crescent-shaped slippage openings. Note that these form due to several factors, such as the presence of elements like dirt or water in the paving layers. When this happens, it causes poor bonding in all the surface layers. Another cause of this problem is using the wrong mix when installing the pavement. So, once you notice these cracks, get a contractor to remove the asphalt on the affected area until they reach an adequately bonded area. Then, they will patch the upper area to restore the surface to its original look.

Block Cracks

Usually, block cracking forms the shape of big squares on the pavement. The primary cause is inadequate moisture during application and severe temperature cycles that make it hard for the surface binder to expand and contract effectively. Note that the cracks can be repaired if the damage isn't extensive. However, in severe cases, an overlay replacement will be required.

Now that you understand the forms of asphalt paving cracks, their possible causes, and solutions, do not ignore the damage. Contact a local asphalt paving contractor to learn more.
